Amber Bernard
Writer, videographer and editor

About Me
Amber Bernard was born and raised in Unama'ki, more commonly known as Cape Breton, NS. She has strong ties to her community and is a proud member of the Mi'kmaq Nation. Amber has also lived in Edmonton, Vancouver, Saskatoon and Ottawa, and considers each place a small piece of home. Journalism was a natural choice for Amber, she grew up in a politically active family that was passionate about bringing awareness to Indigenous rights and issues. So, for her, it’s important to be a part of the shift Canadian news so desperately needs: Indigenous people, telling Indigenous stories.
She is an alumna of NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology), graduating in 2018 with a diploma in Television and Radio Broadcasting. Upon graduating Amber quickly landed a spot with APTN National News, where she served as a reporter and video-journalist. While working for APTN National News, she was apart of the award-winning project "Tracking Transmountain" which was published by HuffPost, Discourse Media, APTN and won a data storytelling award from the Radio Television Digital News Association.
After spending almost two years with APTN National News, Amber decided to return to school to complete her Bachelor of Communication Studies. She is currently in her final year and is on track to graduate in spring 2021. Her choice to return to school came from a place of deep consideration for the communities she covers, as she wants to further develop her writing and critical thinking skills: she is eager to jump back full-time in the communications and media industry.
Amber has a keen interest in covering stories involving political tension and most recently covered the Mi'kmaq moderate livelihood fishery disputes in Nova Scotia for the Nova Scotia Advocate. She has also covered pieces from sports to entertainment as well.
Amber is sought out by Indigenous peoples across Canada who want their stories told, their histories known, and who want their people's presence felt and honoured. Having that connection has broadened her storytelling scope and has cast a wide network of both professionals and grassroots leaders across traditional Indigenous territories.
She is passionate about working specifically in communications with focuses on Indigenous priorities. Amber has successfully completed communication contracts with various Indigenous organizations.
When she's not writing or studying for exams, you can often find her daydreaming about the beach. She also likes to read, bake and hike.
